William Paterson University invites applications for the position of Director, Center for Diversity and Inclusion. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Development, the selected candidate will have the unique opportunity to serve as the first director of the newly created Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
The Director will help shape the functions and programs for the Center in order to carry out the vision and mission arrived at through a campus-wide discussion and process that identified social justice as a central theme and diversity and inclusion as core values.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Serving as a key campus leader and advisor in advancing University goals to foster an inclusive, welcoming, and equitable community
* Providing visionary leadership by understanding and addressing the challenges of historically underrepresented and/or marginalized college students
* Developing and promoting co-curricular initiatives and programs to enhance racial, ethnic and cultural understanding and promote social justice and equity; programs are informed by student development theory, best practices, and assessment data
* Working collaboratively with the Women's Center, Campus Activities, Service and Leadership, student organizations and other identified stakeholders to develop, guide, support, and promote programs and activities that highlight, educate and celebrate the history and contributions of diverse peoples and identities
* Serving as a role model for students while providing the inspiration, vision, mentoring and direction to assist them in achieving personal, academic, and professional goals
* Providing oversight and support for the Black Cultural Center and guiding continuing campus discussions regarding the needs of other identity groups on campus
* Developing, deploying, and maintaining an online department-wide comprehensive marketing and promotion presence
* Conducting regular assessment and compile monthly and annual reports as directed
* Assisting in major division activities such as New Student Orientations, Welcome Weeks, Homecoming/Family Day, and civic engagement

Required Qualifications:
* Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Sociology or related field
* Seven years of progressively responsible experience related to diversity, social justice and inclusion in the college/university environment
* Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds
* Demonstrated success advancing equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives and in planning and implementing programs serving populations of students that are underrepresented, underserved, or who experience systemic and culturally based forms of bias and prejudice
* Knowledge and/or demonstrated interest in best practices, innovations, emerging trends and leading issues in higher education and in the national discussion of diversity, equity and inclusion
Preferred qualifications:
* Experience hiring, training, supervising and evaluating professional/paraprofessional and graduate and undergraduate student staff.
* Familiarity with research and scholarship in Women's and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies (such as Africana Studies, Latinx Studies, and Asian Studies), and Queer/LGBTQ Studies.
* Experience in program development and execution - identifying needs, developing programs to meet needs, marketing and successfully executing, and evaluating effectiveness.
Personal attributes and traits:
* Ability to work independently, identify creative solutions to solve problems, work collaboratively in teams, and effectively manage frequent changes in work assignments.
* Proven ability to engage and collaborate effectively with diverse students, faculty and leadership to bring about transformational change. Demonstrated experience in fostering positive intergroup and interpersonal relationships and community building.
* Excellent leadership abilities and demonstrated ability to establish, maintain and adjust priorities as circumstances warrant.
* Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, and demonstrate a high level of personal integrity.
* Flexibility to accommodate work schedule demands for oversight and attendance at evening and/or weekend events.
